Our Key Stage 4 Engineering curriculum aims to create an environment where every student can feel they belong in the world of engineering and to make the most of their potential The course builds upon the foundations established in key stage 3, allowing every developing engineer to strengthen their technical skills through practical application and collaborative projects, following the requirements of the WJEC Level 1/2 specification.
We deliver a hands-on, project-based course that fosters a broad appreciation of the engineering sector.. The core aim is to cultivate confident, capable engineers by maximizing their potential. Students gain and refine fundamental engineering skills—including design, manufacturing, and complex problem-solving—which are vital for future study or successful careers.
This pathway emphasizes practical mastery. Learners develop high-standard accuracy and attention to detail by using industry-relevant tools, equipment, and machines, including advanced CAD/CAM technology. They master the ability to interpret an engineering drawing and follow a technical specification to create high-quality items. Furthermore, students develop their technical voice by learning to produce precise engineering drawings using both traditional methods and modern Computer-Aided Design (CAD) processes. Finally, the course structure emphasises a “plan, do, review” cycle, mirroring authentic industry practice. This approach ensures real-world application and teaches learners to reflect, adapt, and continuously improve—a key characteristic of being the best they can be within the engineering community.
Success in this course serves as a vital foundation for a diverse range of post-16 opportunities, clearly showing students their progression toward rewarding careers. The technical and creative skills developed here are a powerful springboard for further study in A-level Product Design, which allows students to blend aesthetics and functionality to create commercial products. This qualification also provides a strong base for pursuing GCEs in Engineering, Design, as well as various Advanced Apprenticeships in sectors like Mechanical, Civil, or Manufacturing Engineering. By fostering strong problem-solving and technical skills, we ensure our students are well-prepared to take the next step towards becoming the innovators and design leaders of tomorrow.
