Economics

Curriculum Intent

The A-level Economics course is strategically designed to deliver on our college’s mission. Economics is the study of scarcity and choice, equipping students with the analytical mindset needed to understand global challenges, evaluate policy, and make informed decisions that benefit both themselves and their community. This focus on fairness and resource allocation is essential for fostering a climate of belonging and achieving personal and societal excellence (being the best they can be).

Fostering a Sense of Belonging and Economic Fairness

A cohesive community relies on understanding economic disparities and working towards solutions that benefit all members. Our curriculum directly addresses this need.

  • Understanding Inequality and Social Impact: Through the study of The Operation of Markets and Market Failure, students learn why markets don’t always deliver fair outcomes. They investigate issues like externalities (e.g., pollution), public goods, and information gaps, which contribute to poverty and social exclusion. By identifying these market failures, students are empowered to advocate for policies that improve social welfare and ensure more equitable outcomes, strengthening the bond of the community.
  • Promoting Global Citizenship: The curriculum extends to The National and International Economy, where students analyse globalisation, trade, and economic development. This lens helps students understand the interdependence of nations and diverse economic experiences worldwide. By exploring concepts like Absolute and Comparative Advantage, students cultivate a sense of global awareness, recognising that true belonging extends beyond local borders.
  • The Role of Government: Students critically evaluate how Monetary and Fiscal Policy can be used to achieve macroeconomic objectives (like low unemployment and stable prices). Understanding these tools enables students to engage thoughtfully in political and economic debates, ensuring they become informed citizens who can contribute constructively to the economic decisions that affect their lives and the lives of others.
Enabling Students to Be the Best They Can Be

Economics is a highly rigorous, evidence-based discipline that sharpens mathematical and analytical skills, preparing students for success in competitive university courses and future professional leadership roles.

  • Developing Data-Driven Criticality: The course places a heavy emphasis on quantitative skills, requiring students to calculate, interpret, and apply statistical concepts like elasticity, index numbers, and economic indicators. This mastery of data analysis ensures students leave the course as highly skilled analysts, capable of moving beyond opinion to base their conclusions on empirical evidence.
  • Mastering Analytical Problem-Solving: Students are consistently challenged to use complex theoretical models, such as Supply and Demand diagrams
, to model real-world behaviour of individuals and firms. They develop the ability to construct logical chains of reasoning, moving from economic assumptions to predictive outcomes, which is the foundation of high-level academic and professional problem-solving.
  • Cultivating Ethical Evaluation: Economics is not just about efficiency; it’s about evaluating the consequences of choices. By analysing the strengths and weaknesses of different economic systems and policies, students learn to incorporate judgement and evaluation into their work. This forces them to consider the ethical trade-offs (e.g., efficiency vs. equity) inherent in every major decision, equipping them to be responsible leaders who strive for the best possible outcomes for all stakeholders.

In summary, A-level Economics is a powerful, highly marketable qualification that develops students into exceptionally analytical, commercially aware, and ethically minded individuals. It equips them not only to understand the mechanics of the modern world but to actively shape its future for the better, perfectly fulfilling our mission.
