Criminology

Curriculum Intent

The Level 3 Criminology course at our college is purposefully designed to reflect and embody our fundamental school mission: to be “a community where everyone feels they belong, and is the best they can be.”

Through a rigorous and applied curriculum, we foster informed, reflective, and socially aware individuals who are prepared to understand the complexities of justice and make a positive contribution to society.

Fostering a Community Where Everyone Feels They Belong

The study of Criminology places a strong emphasis on understanding the social context of crime and the processes of criminal justice. This focus directly supports our mission of creating a cohesive community by encouraging students to look beyond individual acts and consider the societal impact of crime, justice, and effective social control.

The course achieves this understanding through three key areas:

  • Changing Awareness of Crime (Unit 1): Students learn about the different types of crime and explore the influences on public perceptions, including why certain crimes go unreported. They actively work to improve community safety by learning to plan and execute campaigns for positive social change.
  • Crime Scene to Courtroom (Unit 3): This unit provides a comprehensive understanding of the entire criminal justice system, from the initial crime identification to the final verdict. Learners develop the critical skills needed to review the justice of criminal cases, ensuring an appreciation for fairness and due process in our legal framework.
  • Crime and Punishment (Unit 4): Students evaluate the effectiveness of various forms of social control and punishment in delivering criminal justice policy. This ensures our students understand the structures that protect community boundaries and maintain a sense of safety and belonging for all.
Enabling Students to Be the Best They Can Be

The Criminology course is designed as an Applied General qualification, meaning it is highly valued for developing essential academic skills and preparing students for competitive university courses and professional careers. We empower our students to be their best by developing critical thinking and providing a clear path to high-level achievement.

This personal development is driven by:

  • Criminological Theories (Unit 2): Students engage with challenging ideas by examining biological, individualistic, and sociological theories to understand why people commit crime. This requires them to think critically, challenge assumptions about crime, and apply their analysis to current policy development.
  • Acquisition of Transferable Skills: The course explicitly cultivates essential skills in research, analysis, evaluation, and communication, which are the foundation of academic and professional success across any discipline.
  • Progression and Career Readiness: We prepare students for future careers in demanding fields, including law, policing, probation, forensic psychology, and the wider criminal justice sector. The qualification is an excellent stepping stone for a range of degree courses such as BSc Criminology and LLB Law with Criminology.

In summary, our Criminology programme serves not just as an academic pathway, but as a powerful mechanism for developing knowledgeable, ethical, and highly-skilled citizens who will ultimately contribute to a fairer and more successful society.
