Curriculum Intent

We aim to provide a challenging and inspiring curriculum which is inclusive of and accessible to all students. Our curriculum pathway is sequenced in a logical and challenging manner giving all students a rigorous foundation in musical understanding and enabling broader access to further study at KS4.

Music at Philip Morant focusses on the foundation of our community: a sense of belonging. By providing equal opportunity for all, no matter the content or skills being explored by students, a lifelong curiosity and respect for music and the arts is attained. Students will learn to sing, perform on a variety of instruments, compose and appraise music with critical analysis.

Each student will receive tailor made resources and experiences alongside expert guidance from staff and specialist support as we adapt environments and teaching approaches. We pride ourselves on encouraging students to engage in a diverse and extensive curriculum covering musical styles and cultures from around the world. The impact of different demographics, cultures and music, on our world will be discussed and evaluated throughout our curriculum by students. Students will consistently engage with our school values of aspiration, kindness and success. They will be inspired by visiting professional musicians, targeted workshops, experience working alongside those in the music industry, performance opportunities both in the classroom and further afield, and group work.

Students are taught the value of being part of an equal team, where the individual has a specific and essential role. Students are encouraged to be kind, respectful and safe whilst nurturing independent practice and commitment to a skill. This can be frequently seen in our many performances students participate in, and the excellent feedback from fellow students, staff and members of the public. Students will routinely work alongside one another, overcoming social or physical barriers to provide a high standard of outcomes. They will provide accurate feedback and set goals for themselves and others.

Music technology is at the beating heart of our modern world, and in turn, our curriculum. Students will regularly engage with different forms of technology to sequence, appraise, compose and perform as part of their regular routines within music lessons. Students’ learning will evolve and adapt in response to the world around us.

At Philip Morant, it is our mission to ensure that every learner, regardless of their background or needs, is supported to thrive.
